Why choose Embedded Development as a career option? 29 Iulie 2011 |
Throughout the last few months I’ve been confronted with the necessity of explaining to colleagues and candidates for various positions in Pentalog Technology why a career as an Embedded Software Engineer is a logical and desirable choice for a Computer Science / Electronics / Telecommunications graduate, rather than a career as a Java / C# developer.
In am not in any way underestimating the abilities and talent needed for doing Object Oriented Programming, nor am I describing the Embedded Software Development activity as one to be performed by certain Engineering graduates. But attention has shifted throughout the years to programming languages with a higher level of abstraction, whereas low level programming languages continue to be regarded as “restrictive”, “unfriendly” and unnecessarily difficult.
Well, almost everything you’ve heard is true. Low-level programming does impose a considerable amount of rules and wrong programming can lead to dramatic consequences on a functional level. “Functional” is actually the keyword here. Embedded Development is addressed to a physical product in 90% of the cases, an object that enters your life and makes it easier in some way. Precisely because we are talking about a palpable object, a malfunctioning is out of the question. Regulations and certifications are so strict (especially in Europe and the United States) that most car / home appliance / mobile device manufacturers will simply give up on a product if it doesn’t meet the majority of requirements from the early stages of development.
Furthermore, deadlines for issue resolution are directly linked with the necessity of short time-to-market for the product, making the pressure on the engineer (hardware or software) higher.
So, you have a great deal of responsibility, cumulated with the pressure of releasing the product on the market as soon as possible. Why would anyone want to work in such conditions, you might ask?
Well, first of all, I believe that high pressure on the product developer exists, no matter the product. The product will differ, the pressure will shift from a time-related one to a quantity related or a quality related one, but essentially, we all work under pressure.
As far as responsibility is concerned, had nobody assumed responsibility for planes building, car construction or aeronautics development, we would have never transformed flight into the most successful and practical travel method, we would have never known the passion for cars and racing, nor space and what surrounds our little world.
This is what defines an engineer, in my opinion: the capacity to discern which products can be developed in order to push the limits of existing technology without endangering the safety of users and beneficiaries, the intelligence to imagine a solution for realizing it, the ability to drive the product realization and the patience to see it through until it is widely used and it has produced some “added value” for those who have purchased it.
When choosing a career as an Embedded Developer, think of millions of people who will use the mobile phone you are working on, think of hundreds of thousands braking their cars using the ABS you developed and tested for thousands of hours, think that in some years it might be you writing the criteria a train / plane / spacecraft (why not?) must meet in order to be used in the civilian transport system.
This is at the same time a plead intended to bring young engineers back to the engineering fields, and a modest try to show that 21st century engineers, just like 19th and 20th century engineers are still intellectuals, visionaries. There is a widespread opinion that engineers have become “technicians” and their work could easily be taken over by robots. Nothing of the sort. Additionally to the research, product design and development abilities, an engineer has to elaborate a well structured demonstration regarding a product’s utility, he/she has to be capable to reason / argue the impact of a technology. Study fields such as the ethics and philosophy of science draw their blood from the work and contribution of engineers around the world.
Pentalog, through its structures dedicated to research and innovation, development and maintenance of products in the semiconductor technologies, has shown great interest in the potential of engineers (around the world, since now it’s a global business) and is constantly cultivating the values that have lead us to this point in the technological evolution: curiosity, daring, responsibility and comprehension of the needs of those around you.

Pentru una dintre cele mai puternice companii din domeniul asigurarilor din lume, cu 45 de milioane de clienti in peste 50 de tari din intreaga lume, People Centric desfasoara un proiect de recrutare pentru postul de Business Analyst. Misiunea principala va consta in implicarea in activitatea de adaptare si/sau modificare a sistemelor informatice prin analiza proceselor de business, elaborarea de planuri de testare si elaborarea documentatiei si procedurilor de lucru. Veti actiona totodata ca interfata intre departamentul IT si clientii interni.
In acest rol, veti fi responsabil(a) de:
- Documentarea proceselor de business;

Job description:
For one of our clients, a global company that offers financial services (banking, insurance, asset management) in over 60 countries, we are looking for a person that can occupy a position of SQL DB and Application Administrator.
For one of our clients, a global company that offers financial services (banking, insurance, asset management) in over 60 countries, we are looking for a person that can occupy a position of SQL DB and Application Administrator.
Responsibilites:
- Operational tasks on the production/test MS SQL databases.
- Optimization of the SQL import packages/jobs;
- Optimize SQL indexes and stored procedures;
- Perform the administration and optimization of the systems that are assigning to him/her and assure the availability and the response/resolution times specified in SLAs or in his objectives.
- He/She is primarily responsible for finding solutions, workarounds and/or fixes in order to maintain and improve the functionality of the systems in his/her administration.
- Promote the new applications/systems into production, perform various technical tests on systems and properly install the patches and version releases, following the company’s Standards for all the systems implemented and for all the solutions applied.
- Helps the 1st line support officers to prioritize and solve problems related to his/her area of expertise and when a problems that exceeds the 1st line support officers skills occurs, he/she takes over the problem and tries to find a solution.
- Escalates the problems to other lines of support or provider if the case, records the solutions, workarounds and the steps he takes in order to solve the problem in the recording service and notifies the user or the 1st line support when the problem is complete and provides procedures if the case.
- Documents the systems he/she is responsible for and their changes.
Requirements:
- University degree – preferable in computer science;
- At least 1 year experience in IT help desk support SQL Database Administration;
- At least 1 year experience of SQL Database Administration;
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL, IIS;
- Good English skills (both oral and written);

Responsibilities:
As a Java Software Developer, you will be in charge of:
- Analyzing and conceiving specific products for financial and banking sector;
- Specific development activities, using Agile concepts (particularly Scrum);
- Implementing, validating and testing the results;
- Ensure that the final product fits the client requirements.
Requirements:
- A degree in computer science or equivalent qualification as a software development specialist;
- Good expertise of object oriented Java J2SE programming (minimum 3-5 years experience);
- Knowledge in C++ is considered an advantage;
- Good understanding of Agile and Scrum application;
- Good understanding of financial and banking sector;
- Previous experience with FIX protocol;
